Abstract

|
The Z-plasty is simply a technique by which two triangular flaps are interchanged, one for another. The first Z-plasty was carried out to relief ectropion of the lower right eyelid by Horner in 1837. Mc Curdy introduced the term in 1913. The Z-plasty geometrically consists of a central limb and two limbs which are positioned so that they resemble the letter "Z".
The limbsof the Z must always be equal in length to the central member and should extend outward from it at angle which can vary between 30 and 90 degrees. In the classic Z-plasty this angle is 60 degrees.
The Z-plasty is an effective weapon in surgical forays against a multitude of defects upon and beneath the body surface.
Foundamentally, a Z-plasty may performed any or all of four functions, which are
1) to increase length
2) to break up a straight line
3) to shift topographic features from one site to another
4) to efface or create a web or cleft Brief of review of Z-plasty is added.
